Is It Bad to Beat a Student With a Baseball Bat?

Even if they are REALLY asking for it?

You think by the fifth week of school, and the first exam, students would understand that they are supposed to be doing the reading and HOW to do the reading. I have two books. I have explained over and over again how to tell which book is which (and it’s freaking obvious, I might add)… and I still get a question at the review today: “So the test is just going to be over lecture, right? We don’t need to do the reading, right?”

Right. You’re exactly right. I just put it on the syllabus so it didn’t look so empty.

I have huge crushes on both Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris. Thanks for putting this up.

And the show did win the Emmy.

CourageCone 2 steps forward, 1.989234184 back. He’s slowly improving. Thanks for all the well wishes.

It’s just   a matter of patience and working with him. Here’s hoping.

Teaching Race

I have found that a great way to bring home all the discussion about race and racial inequality is to highlight Hurricane Katrina. I show two parts of When the Levees Broke (Trouble the Water needs to be captioned before it can be effectively used in the classroom). It brings together residential segregation, housing, prejudice, health… Oh, about everything. I then match this with data about the event and what has happened since. Reason why I’m tell you all this is that there is a new report is now out about the state of health in Lousiana and New Orleans. See here.

I watched this every day growing up. Dancing on the back of a couch like it was a log. RIP Patrick Swayze.

The Great Tweet

Question for all of you out there that tweet frequently and often.

I don’t tweet. I think I have a dead account somewhere, but I never seriously looked into it. I’m wondering, is it possible to make a tweet group? I’m curious if I can make a twitter account for an entire course, letting anyone in that course update the tweet thread (or whatever that’s called).

I’m thinking for a class like race/ethnicity or stratification, it would be a way to post links to interesting occurrences and to encourage students to do the same thing. I know there might be little use of it by anyone but me, but it gives the possibility of involvement. Of course, you could always grade it — but I don’t think I’d want to. I do get quite a few students who send me links to current goings on. I share those with the class when there is time, but there isn’t always time.

  1. Is this possible?
  2. Has anyone done this?

Domestic violence. Yep, sure. That’s a pre-existing condition and a good reason to deny health coverage. Sure.

but there have just been some great links I want to share…

If you can’t tell, I’m a little obsessed with the public option.

Remember way back when I was talking about how all I dreamed about was a professorial gig and a house with a fenced in yard for a dog? Well I got the gig, got the house, and even got the dog. Cute, ain’t he?

new house 011I love the house. I do. It’s ours… which makes up for little (or big bad electrical issues that could cause a fire) issues. What  I don’t like is the complete inability to leave the house besides to go to work.

Our dog is a neurotic mess. He has separation anxiety which results in him trying to escape from the house if both of us leave. In fact, he tried so hard once that he managed to dig large chunks of wood out of the door frame of the little room we had kept him in.

He’s also afraid of his own shadow. He’s afraid of Blue. He’s afraid of the cats (though with good reason). He’s terrified of his own reflection. He doesn’t play with toys… at all. He’s afraid of the tennis ball. He won’t let me move more than 3 feet away from him. He is my constant shadow. In fact, he’s watching me write this RIGHT NOW. In order to try to give him a bit of backbone, we named him Courage. Two weeks in, doesn’t seem to be working.

Don’t get me wrong. Love the dog. Really do. But if we aren’t allowed to go to a coffee shop to get a drink just for 15 minutes, I may go crazy. Lots of advice… little of it seems to be working as of yet. We’re trying to be patient. I’m about ready to hire a babysitter so I can eat out with Blue.
